The gang and I were PSYCHED to have some real authentic hotpot in chengdu. We went to a place as recommended by the locals. The restaurant's logo is a good 'ol fashioned american thumbs up!
The menu was in Chinese so we didn't know what to order, what could possibly go wrong?

It's where they breed those garbage monsters from star wars.
Pigs are kinda smart, but I think even they won't touch the brains... sorry Simon. If it makes you feel any better, I got tricked into eating brains when I was six in France by my dad. He was probably drunk, definitely looking for a laugh, and told me it was a "pudding pile."
(shudder)
best video so far! it had everything; rad editing and narration. hilarious, that hot pot will give me nightmares.
oh wait. second best video. forgot about cynthia's MV.
OOOOOOOOOOOOhhh, that delicious hotpot! It looks so yummy. MMMM. That's authentic. You could not get anything close to it anywhere in America! For those uncultivated un-gourmet eaters, what can I say.
Although I did appreciate your creative naming of things: blood river, clean area, contaminated area. Us Chinese parents could get a hearty laugh out of it.
is the thumb in that pic supposed to look like a pepper or a penis?
This is a real hot pot, look delicious.(Actually, look terribly)
When we are young,we ate pig blood, chicken blood, pig ear, feet, brain, etc. This is why making us smart.Although,I never like it.I like Simon's expression that exactly same as lick ice cream when he was 10 months old.
again, your moms are killing me with their feisty cuteness.
1. "nao hua" - as in...brain/head flowers? um...that's certainly a euphemism
2. cynth, you're lookin' EXTRA XXXXTRA purdy. are the pollutants in the air over there like, filled with pretty crystals?
3. brilliant names. i know the blood river...the one that flows once a month.
OH SNAP!
Hah, funny video. Found your blog searching for information about chengdu.
I'm keen to try the hotpot, which is suppose to be amazing -- if you can get the edible meat version.
Great blog so far and loads of fun. I went to china with my relatives during the summer and it was a blast. I can totally relate with your experiences (I tried scorpion, dog, duck brain, etc).
At least you guys speak the language, which is a big plus. I'm a half chinese, half whiter with none of the language skills of the chinese side (except for a couple months of mandarin in uni). Ordering edible food's gonna be a challange.
